“Senator Franken, I’m not aware of any of those activities. I have been called a surrogate at a time or two in that campaign and I didn’t have — did not have communications with the Russians, and I’m unable to comment on it.”
Sessions said he did not have knowledge of Trump associates having contacts nor did he communicate with Russian officials. Nancy Pelosi said it appears Sessions may have committed perjury.
Sergey Kislyak, the Russian ambassador, is considered by US intelligence to be one of Russia’s top spies and spy-recruiters in Washington. He is the same Russian over which Trump’s National Security Advisor, General Michael Flynn, was connected with during the campaign. Flynn resigned last month from the cabinet.
House Republican Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy of California and House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz of Utah have joined leading Democrats call for Sessions to recuse himself from the federal investigation into Russia’s attempts to influence last year’s presidential election.
Later Thursday: Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from any investigation related to President Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and associate contacts with Russian agents.
