MITCH MCCONNELL KILLS SENATE FILLIBUSTERS ~ Gary Bahr, BahrWorks – 4/13/17
Mitch McConnell said as Republican minority leader of the Senate, “No majority leader wants written on his tombstone that he presided over the end of the Senate,” and “Breaking the rules to change the rules is un-American.”
As majority leader of the Senate he changed Senate rules last week to do away with filibusters to allow a new Supreme Court nomination.
He has often changed his views to accomplish his goal for the moment. The Senate may not survive such abuse of power. It certainly will be hurt by the end of reasoned debate in filibusters and the end of 60 votes for reasonable Supreme Court Justice approval.
In 2010 McConnell introduced gridlock and declared “The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.”
When Justice Antonin Scalia’s death in 2016 in less than an hour McConnell said the vacancy should be filled by the next president who he hoped would be Republican.
